Last year, Nike made headlines for their controversial support of U.S. President Donald Trump. Now, it’s Kanye West and Adidas that are under fire. Some might think this is career suicide but is it really? Or will these brands experience the famous “trump bump?”
NIKE UNDER FIRE FOR TRUMP SUPPORT; ADIDAS NEXT?
Last year, Nike was under hot fire from a California grassroots group. The thing is, the famous shoe company never really supported the president, to begin with. They’ve had a flagship Niketown store in New York City’s Trump tower for years. Hence, the advocacy group calls this “financial support.” However, it’s quite clear who the shoe company supports. In this past year’s NFL “kneeling controversy” Nike firmly sided with the players against the president. Now that we know where they stand, it’s time to see what Adidas has to say.
ADIDAS STICK WITH KANYE AND TRUMP; NIKE GOES OTHER WAY
While Nike went the other way when confronted with their Trump support, Adidas has another plan in mind. Adidas, who is a close partner of Kanye West and decided to stick with the hip-hop star after his controversial remarks about slavery. West described slavery as a choice and even went on to praise Donald Trump for his work as president so far. The internet exploded in a fit of rage and it seemed like West’s career was over. However, Adidas did not back down from their partnerhip.
THE FUTURE OF ADIDAS NIKE AND DONALD TRUMP
Years ago, it didn’t matter what brands supported which president. In fact, there was not even a related conversation about that. Yet, we live in different times now. This is the age of the internet. Everything is connected, whether you think that’s a good thing or not. It will be interesting to see where the next couple years take us. Which big brand will side with Trump next? Will it be decentralized crypto exchange Kelvin, electric car company Tesla or will Jeff Bezos just use his army of robots to win the White House in 2020? Only time will tell.
